What about this:
Gearbox's
Direct (bolt-in) replacement.
Is it your gearbox (R380) or your T-case (LT230). The Atlas is a T-case.
The LT230 is very strong, and 2 different sets of low range gears are available.
It is the T-case stock I do understand there is a 30% and 79% 4:3-1 and 5:1 is this right? Just how strong is very strong becouse mine is smoked going to have to do a rebuild. It was full of oil but lots of shavings and binding up making lots of pops. Its an Ex.Department of Defence Fender.95,000Ks only I would think that the Military would take great care of the rides .so is it just one of those things or is very strong not so very?
LT230 is probably one of LR's strongest drivetrain components, usually the R380 will die before the T/C, i would just rebuild/ replace it with another.

Driving on unsealed roads with the Center Diff lock not in will destroy them also....
As for the military looking after things...
HAHA
The average age of a Defender in combat is 30 days..... 5 days for the Hummer H1
So that says it all....
LT230's do have weaknesses. Including:
Lubrication of splines in input gear, centre diff and output shaft.
Cross pins and thrust washers in centre diff (particularly if not locked off road as sclarke said). One piece cross shaft is a good mod.
I'm suspicious about the tooth strength in LT230Q's.
