    Series 3 ignition.

I have been doing some work on a friend's 1982 Land Rover Series 3 109 station wagon. The wiring is a bit of a mess, with all sorts of add-ons including a good half dozen relays and a few circuit-breakers. Included in this maze is the ignition system, which features a resistor and a GT40R coil.
I had a similar set up on my KE20 Corolla, but I've never seen it on a Landy, and this one seems to only be set up for single circuit ignition. Something tells me it shouldn't be on there, but being so late a model I'm not completely sure. It's a 5 bearing 4cyl petrol, its original late-type dizzy has been removed (broken vacuum diaphragm) and replaced with the more common early type (though this is internally rusty and the diaphragm is also a non-goer).
In short, did the 82 4cyl Series 3s have resisted ignition, or not? I know what has to be changed if not, I just didn't want to go blundering in unprepared.

I do not believe that any Series Landrovers had a ballast resistor in the coil circuit - but the need for this depends on the coil, and with a suitable coil would work perfectly well. My guess is that a previous owner has used an available coil that required a ballast resistor.

It does show, however, the advantage of keeping things standard - at least you know what should be there!

    Thanks again.

Well, I got it going, having changed it back to standard. Really good engine!

One odd thing I did find was the distributor which was fitted when I got to it. It was an older Lucas type but it was built to turn clockwise. All Land Rover ones I know of turn anticlockwise. This one therefore doesn't have vacuum advance, more like vacuum retard.

It's not a life-and-death issue, but what engine does it come from? I'm guessing A Series Austin, or maybe Ferguson/Triumph/Standard. I just want to find it a new home before it gets lost in my Land Rover stash.

    Thanks.
