    ABS woes

ok guys...i did a few k's over the weekend down to amamoor sf and back to Hervey bay through calooloola way, povety point etc...hit some hills around amamoor and some heavy sand around povety point (don't know what the hell they have done to that track, but it was very deep sand wise , this time around ) and a few times there l seamed to be having a problem braking its as if the abs is playing up or it has a mind of its own .... id slowly hit the break and all of a sudden the abs would go into a huge shutter and the truck seemed to loose control of the system until l pulled it back into line , my question is has anyone els had this prob and is there anyone that can point me in the right direction to what the problem is ??

    cheers

I had a similar problem, my brakes have always been very spongy and sometimes when I put the brakes on, not hard but hard enough to stop me from wiping out the car infront the abs sometimes kicked in. My brakes have always been spongey to the point where even if I slam the brakes on I cant lock up the wheels and the ABS doesn't kick in.

I ended up replacing my brake booster, master cylinder and pressure relief value, my theory is that the pressure relief valve was buggered and it was sending too much bias to the front causing the system to kick in, but I could be wrong.

It's not happened since I made all those changes so something fixed it...

Don't bother asking how much a new ABS modulator is... I phoned up landrover and it's worth more than my car

You can buy a kit for the modulator.
Chatting to the local LR spare parts bloke and he said there was a rebuild kit for it.

some basic things to check first....

the brakes themselves... have you got an off disc or pad?
the bleed, with the vehicle off pump the brakes a few times to exhaust the vac chamber and then after waiting 10 minutes or so apply the brakes, how do they feel? If they are spongy now your ABS doesnt stand a hope of working properly.
When was the last brake fluid change? How was it done?

IF all of that is good and the last bleed was inside 12 months and you havent been loosing fluid and its still clean in the reservoir then you need to move on to the expensive bits.

Excellent quote from your son. He knows what it's all about. When my young fella was five I T-boned a bongovan (mitsubishi L300 express) that stupidly thought I could avoid him with about thirty feet warning at 60kmh. I quickly turned around to check the kids and he said with a giggle and a smile, "Dad, the Rangie does good crashes!"
