Thread: Series gearbox leaks

from memory, so I may be wrong,

you can remove the top of the box, undo the shafts from the forks, leave the forks in-situ, slide the shafts out and replace the O-Ring, the slide the shafts back into the forks and do up the securing bolt.

I hope it's that easy.

To put it simply, there isn't. The bell housing is in the road to just slide the selector rods out of the forks. If you've got to get it that far down, it's just as easy to take the selectors completely out and do it on the bench. Less chance of dropping bolts into the gearbox's bowels, too.

Use these O'rings:

1/2, 3/4 selectors - BS207: 9/16"ID x 1/8" cross section.
Reverse selector - BS 208: 5/8"ID x 1/8" cross section.

The workshop manual gives instructions on how to dismantle and refit the shafts in the correct order. It's different between Series 2s and 3s.

Removing and refitting the selectors is easy (but fiddly - patience needed) with the box in situ.

I usually put a thin smear of silastic on the outside of the o-rings/retaining plates, to ensure there are no leaks around the outside of the seals.

Agree with that,I put a smear of grease on the shafts too,just a bit so they slide through the seals nicely. Pat
