Disco2 td5 auto vibration very bad vibration and no throttle response in reverse???

Hi guys a friend of mine just rang me he has a d2 td5 auto with about 280k on the clock it has developed a very bad vibration while in gear especially around 90ks and if you put it in reverse there is no throttle any help would be appreciated we think the trans is stuffed but could the throttle be linked or does it sound like a different problem?

    Thanks Keith

    Hi keith
Automatics are a strange beast ..... Regardless of an answer ... Your friend will need to go to a auto box repair shop ... If only just to give it a service

Firstly ... Check oil level (check when cold engine)
Second ... Check oil colour (does it look & smell burn't)
Third ....... check the accelerator kickdown cable works & is setup properly

Vibration could be "Low oil .... or needs service badly"
    OR it could be just
    shagged uni joint's
    Tailshaft balance / problems
    wheels out of balance
broken gearbox & engine rubber mounts

No throttle response in reverse means clutches are shot
    OR it could be
"Low oil .... or needs service badly"
Jammed kickdown cable (doubt it tho)

OR ....mechanical fault with linkages to the gear shift

    Hope it helps

    Mike

Check the flexible coupling (rubber donut) on the rear tail shaft just before the rear diff, for splits, tears or deformation.
Not sure about your reverse though.

    What about the handbrake?
That is what it sounds like to me. An overadjusted handbrake.

I think just about any workshop/home mechanic could service a D2 auto,,
theres no adjustment and you may or may not need a gasket, just need to be able to drop a pan of oil and pump new stuff in.
go with the smell test, theres no kickdown cable, and check handbrake adjustment.

Thanks for all your suggestions apparently it is the torque converter that is stuffed and the computer is upset so it wont give any throttle. I believe it is now in the hands of the "experts"
