disco 1 4.11 gears and lockers

Godmornin all, after a couple of months fitting xl flares,2 1/2 inch bodylift and 3"spring lift,i can finally run my cooper 35" mt's...its now time to set up the diffs and get barwork done, just got a couple of questions... will 4.11 diff gearing bring my final drive back to standard or do i have to run lower gearing...ie 4.5/1? who sells the gears in n.s.w. and also any thoughts on airlockers vs trutrak vs detroit??? can i run standard cvs with airlockers if only front locker used only as little as poss? ive just had some figures thrown at me to set up the front diff and the costs are sky high with axles cvs etc....i want to do both lockers at one time while changing the gearing, but can only afford to get heavy duty REAR axles with my budget at the moment.. ant thoughts would be appreciated.. cheers,Ramon.

    Hi Ramon

4.11's wont bring your gearing back to standard but it is an acceptable ratio for 35's. I am unsure of what the drive ratio would need to be to get it back to standard.

A manually operated diff lock is the way to go and IMO the only way to go in the front. Auto lockers and side slopes are dangerous and in a constant awd set up wont work in the front at all well.

Run the standard c.v.'s and see how you go if you keep breaking them then you will need to upgrade. You will break inner axles on the front if you dont upgrade these. The stub axle is a good fuse for protecting the inner components and much easier to change over than an inner axle, cv or diff.

Is it a manual or auto. The auto is a lot less sensitive to gearing. 4.11 will bring 33's back to standard gearing, and 4.3's I think it is will bring 35's back to standard. There are no Rover 4.3 gear sets that I can think of, and if you want that ratio specifically then you would have to change axles completely or fit Toyota diff centres which is harder and more expensive. I run 4.11's in an auto with that tyre size and they're fine. I thnk the difference between 29's and 33's is around 15% and then another 5% on to 35's, so the gaps isn't too great. If it is a manual, from what I have seen its the 30% and 49% low rage gears that really bring them alive in the bush for slow, heavy and locker type terrain.

Re diffs, my preference is for selectable lockers, be they ARB, Maxi, JacMac or whatever. There is no affects on the vehicle when they are out and when they are in you have 100% positive locking action. There are times when you don't what things locked up - and if you are running 35's, body and springs then you will find that type of terrain. They are just very flexible in use. I tend to think the TT's would be excellent touring diffs, and apparently work really well with ETC, but they are not necessarily as positive as you may need in the rough.

CV's, just see how you go. Just be careful when the front locker is in and you have the steering wheel turned as this is what weakens/breaks them - especially if crossed up or in a rut. I the straight ahead position is when they are at their strongest.

    Read HD axles - absolutely.
    Cheers
    Slunnie

    Ramon,

Good move with the Maxi rear axles, and 4.11 gears will have you damn close, as Slunnie has already mentioned.

Regarding the front, personally, I wouldn't sorry about the locker and CVs etc. It's best to have a known weaker point in the drivetrain and better a stub axle or CV than a transfer case etc. Just take it easy and don't be too heavy footed and you should be ok.

Just a technicality, but Maxi-drive does not exist anymore. But you can get the same axles under the new name.
