3 bolt steering box nut keeps coming loose.

My county lower steering box arm nut keeps coming loose. Every 2-300kms i am locking it back up and bashing the lock washer over (yes both ways), but it still rattles loose about 1/16 of a turn which is enough to give me steering slack (the bottom shaft is a tapered spline). I have spoken to people who have had this trouble before, but they just changed to a 4 bolt box. My box doesnt leak so i dont want to change it if i dont need to.

My next option is a 2nd locking nut or a scotch key up the thread, but is there somthing simple that i am not seeing?

I figure that the splines on the drop arm and shaft are a bit worn and that's what is causing the problem. You could try a drop arm from a 4 bolt ( and swap the drag link) but in the end you may have to go for a new box.

Loctite make a product that you can use to fill in the gaps for press fit assemblies - 680 retaining compound ( A little grey tube). I used it to repair some damage my gearbox did to the spigot bush hole, and so far so good. It's not cheap but according to the specs it's tough. To find it, go to assembly solutions-retaining cylindrical assemblies-high strength-680 retaining compound

I had the same problem on my old Rangie. I used a very large spring washer under the nut and it did not come loose again.

Is there a grove cut in the threaded shaft section to take a tag on the inside of the locking washer as you need to stop the locking washer from moving as it needs to be fixed similar to how the locking tabs on the hub nuts are ...

You could try locktite it may help also..

My brother Mick(CAL415) had the same troubles with his county and also floged out the ball in the other end so he changed the arm with one off a rangie i have here and it seems to be ok now im thinking he may have used locktite on the nut as well you would have to wait till he chimes in which could be a while hes still honeymooning at the moment

    some loctite,

drop the arm off and put some 515 on the splines, put it back together and use 262 on the threads...

Dont plan on dissasembling it easily later.
