Fix the Radiator first!!!!
And the fan you can hear still running is electric, not the viscous!
ive read a few threads about removing viscous fan and adding twin ford thermo's
what are the pro and cons of the above???
my d1 v8 is getting a little hot and i find that the viscous isnt doing a thing, i turn off ignition and can here another fan still going.????
i know it could be possible rab blocked, its not water pump(its new)
so its it easy to instal ford twin thermo's?
also how do u acyually remove the viscous fan, there are 4 allen key bolts behind the fan, how do u get to them with a normal allen key? please help
kind regards

im quite sure the rad is ok.
i know its electric fan going but it shouldnt be going for 5 mins after car has been turned off?
the disco hasnt been working hard just highway driving.
it got hot and over heated a bit but that is beacause i over filled expansion tank.
i want to find out what ppl think about fitting ford thermos'...
Remove the radiator and clean it out of mud, bugs and crap and then start chasing other problems.
I went down this path more for the power sucking potential of the viscous fan rather than your reasoning.
You have other problems which fitting electric fans will just cost more money than what it's worth.
If your viscous fan is stuffed then a ford viscous fan with bit of a trim fits or

No it didnt!!!
Overfilling expansion tank may allow a small purge as it heats up...
But overfilling wont make it boil / overheat...
If your running hot, then your running hot.... At highway speed (cruising) the fan isnt doing anything, its the air rammed through the front doing the cooling at highway speed.
Avoid it if you will, ignore advice if you choose...
But your V8 is running hot and twin thermos will not fix this.... Your attempting to mask the issue, not solve it....
BTW, nothing can match the viscous for flow, even twin thermo's...
Your radiator needs to be rodded, flushed, possibly a new thermostat....
But hey, what the heck would I know![]()
i do appreaiate your help. i was just after ppl opions.
temp now only reaches just under half way and hasnt moved.( been running on water 4 a week)
this weekend it is getting new thermostat and new coolant.
does it cost a lot to rod the rad?,
does a rad flush get any of the mud etc.. out?
Rodding is between $150-$400 depending on a few things...
You can remove the rad and save some $$$ by dropping just the radiator in, although they also have pressure flushing systems which are good!!!
I had my V8 rodded, flushed and new coolant for $350 a few years ago.
The Mud etc, will be on the outside, dried between the fins etc, and most likely in front of the lower 3rd of the radiator between it and the condenser
Once the weather heats up, and you load it up on a hill it'll get hot again if its not sorted... Plus doing it once will cost a few $$$, chasing it will cost a lot more!
By cleaning the radiator they mean clean the external fins, no flow through no cooling.
I once had a radiator removed and flushed by a professional but when I got the vehicle back it still ran hot. I decided to upgrade the radiator with a bigger one but when I removed it from the vehicle I found it clogged with insects and mud. Guess they really didn't remove it, certainly charged me for it though.
If not replace the thermostat

Before you refill with coolant, pull it out and clean it, I would put money on that will fix your problem.
It will cost you time and water, nothing more, you wont need rodding or power flush it will just be full of mud and bugs.
While it's out put the hose to the aircon condenser as well as this also fills up and blocks air flow.
After that and if there is still no improovement then do the thermostat and if that doesnt sort it then worry about rodding etc.
Start with cheap and simple and work your way to expensive and difficult mods.
Much cheaper that way.
yeah ok was doing thermostat b4 coolant any way, ill pull the rad out this weekend and do what last thread mentioned,
hopfully i will se improvment.
