I have had my maxi's for ten odd years and have had no problems. yes they can be a bit slow to disengage but that is just a 35'' tyre probably holding more torque than anything.
What you can try is gently loosen the actuator mounting bolts bit by bit and see if it engages any better. If it does you may need a thicker or thinner gasket depending on your situation.

I have not been particularly interested in why they don't work when they are suppose to, so I have not taken notes when it has been explained. But apparently the actuator has grease or other lubricant in it. From those that have trouble with them have indicated that the grease goes hard over time. This causes it to gunk up and makes it difficult to move. This causes it to either not engage or not to disengage. From memory there is something you have to be careful with if you pull it apart, but I can't remember what it is.
I wonder why no one wanted to purchase the maxi-drive difflock part of the business. So I guess that it does not matter whether the are good, bad, or indifferent, you cannot purchase new ones anymore.

Probably the main reason Mal did'nt get a buyer was
A) Too many tyre kickers wanting it for nicks.
B) The diminishing off road market of the TRUE 4wder who actually goes off road and requires maxidrive equipment.
Maxidrive did export to a huge Military market, You wont find that sort of quality locally anymore I'm afraid.
Also try some tests
Put your car on stands and have someone activate the locker while you sit at the diff and look & listen.
Have you checked you are getting vacuum at the actuator.
Is you diff breather clear

I think you will find that they were becoming more expensive to make in the steel grade that he used. Therefore there was not much money in them unless you dropped the quality.Quote:

Something is always going to break if you treat it hard. If you have a difflock and HD axles, the thing that will most likely break is the C&P. I have seen it happen enough, but maybe it is just the idiots I mix with. But then again it happened once on a AULRO trip.Quote:

I ran those tests, as suggested (but a couple of weeks ago now) and everything checked out - no problems and no obvious signs of damage - certainly no lumpy bits came out in the oil!!:o
I put it down to too much traction from the Simex and driving in a basic straight line up, up hill under power. The result was it didn't engage until the point when traction was lost. As to the lights being engaged - I believed they were, but with the heat of competition and looking straight up the hill into the setting sun, didn't make for anything more than a cursury glance!:(
