Smile Questions regarding servicing 200 TDI Discovery

    Hi All,

Going to get my hands dirty this weekend servicing the Disco.

1993 200 TDI Discovery 120000kms Wanting to do oil and filter change as well as flush the radiator.

I have searched the forums but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for, if anyone knows of any links that would be great. Spoke to Dave regarding the Rave and Landy CD's but the 200 TDI didn't seem to be covered.

Is there any tricks or tips to changing the fuel filter?

Same question but for flushing and replenishing the radiator?

Not afraid about getting dirty, do a fair bit of work on my bikes but I have workshop manuals for them dont wan to go in too blind.

Any tips or tricks would be fantastic.

    Cheers

    Kieren

for 90% of what you want the rave will be adequate... it covers the basic principals and since its basically the same engine..........

so long as your not going to use it to try out a rebuild it'll do..

if your going to self flush the radiator spend the money on a flush gun.. but thats pretty pointless if you dont already have a half decent air compressor.

if your just going for a drain rinse and replace (which includes if you do it with a chemical flush) then its as easy as it sounds BUT before you start lay out a tarp and lift the edges so you can control where the coolant goes.

Be gentle with the fittings and dont forget to clean all the connections.

    do the flush last.

    Hi kieren,

    120K??? sounds like a nice condition '93

At this interval,(40,000km intervals) I would also be changing the transmission and drivetrain oils. gearbox,Caltex(LR spec) MTF94, 75w85 gear oil, or Dexron3 auto trans fluid is recommended. (I'd use the MTF94/75w85 up there in Roma) 80w90 gear oil in the transfer case, swivel housings and diffs.

Flushing cooling system; Remove the drain plug from the block, and drain it all out. Refit the plug and remove 1 of the heater hoses at the rear of the engine and flush through clean water until all traces of coolant have gone. Refit all hoses and fill with 33% concentration of coolant/ inhibitor. Bleed the system by removing the small hose at the drivers side top of the radiator while filling the expansion bottle until fluid comes out.

Fuel filter; Just undo it and fit the new one. System will self bleed. There is also a sediment bowl located Drivers side inside of the chassis rail bolted to the inside end of the top shock mount bracket. The through-bolt located from the top in the centre Undoes with a 7/16" spanner. Remove the bowl as a whole and inspect/ clean it thoroughly.

Tappet adjustment; should be carried out every service, we don't leave them for more than 20,000km as they seem to hammer the valve stems too much...

And when did the timing belt last get changed?

these 200Tdis can go to 100,000km on a belt, but longer than 5 or 6 years sees the rubber start to perish...
Haynes do a reasonable 200Tdi manual, try Ebay for a genuine one also.

As JC said the Haynes manual is the go. That's what I use for my 200tdi. I looked into the rave cd but as you found out there isn't one specifically for 200tdi.

Thank you for that. It is in great condition. I am not sure when the timing belt ws done. I bought it about two months ago. Full log book servicing (only stamped) but unfortunatley no details of the previous owner. There have been two mobs that have serviced it, I could only get in contact with one as the other phone number is unreadable in every stamp I know it is on Maitland Road in Islington but that is all. The workshop I did get a hold of believe it or had been bought out 6 months previously and only had kept records for the past 6 months. It may have been owned by a member here as it had a Cooma 1998 sticker on it. I am extremely happy with it.

Now to head down and get some oil and coolant before all the shops shut.

    Cheers

    Kieren
