which redline is that ? the one with the blue label ?
My R380 has always run with ATF from new, anyway I found that in summer it used to grate into third when it was hot and since moving to Kal last summer it started to grate more so I tried all of the gearbox oil's but the box would have none of it.Rick130 suggested redline so I paid more money to change it again and now after 3months I can recomend MTL highly. My gearbox is smoother in all gears and anyone having the usual 3rd gear crunch should try it,a word of warning thou it took 6 weeks to really come good.Give it a try,$30 a quart but if your troubles were like mine you won't regret it. I have just changed mine to Castrol VMX 75/85 so will see how that goes for a while. A fair bit cheaper than Syntrans.
Will bear the MTL in mind though.
Biggest issue I find is being regularly able to get certain oil products. Still waiting on Penrite gear oil to arrive, ordered 6 months ago, but thats Auto 1 for you, not very customer orientated down here. Not the first time either.

No one down here stocks the 75/85 Penrite, have checked most places. May get Repco to have a go at ordering in next time. But realistically I need something that is available regularly and not special order. VMX, Syntrans and Valvoline Syn 75/85 are available easily and stocked at Repco. Even getting HPR 5 Diesel down here is special order, they do stock normal HPR 5 just not the diesel variant.

Guys,
Mine has had a "crunchie" R380 from purchase. Not sure what was in it at 37850k when I purchased it but JC put the standard LR recommended gearbox oil in it (not the transmission fluid).
I've just done the 60,000k service and used the Castrol Syntrans M. ITs not fixed the problem but its sure lessened the symptoms by at least 50%.
Interestingly, Supercrap wanted 29.70 a litre, the castrol dealer sold me a box of it (6 x 1L) for $92.
MTL is in a white bottle and is easily available here as it is one of the fixes for tojo box's that are very common here. Pat
ATF has not been specified for the R380 for over 12 years when it changed to MTF 94. However I also tried many different oils over the years and found Syntrans worked the best in a very wide range of temps - -5 starts in winter to warm 40 starts in summer.
I am sure that a search will show plenty on this as there has been plenty of threads on it over the years.

I tried all the known oils and my gearbox wouldn't have a bar of them.MTL is the peach for mine. Pat
