    Defender TD5 clutch shudder

    Hi Guys,
TheEntertainerI'm getting a bit of a 'clutch shudder' and it irritates the daylight out of me. This happens only in 1st and reverse (well a very little in second), and it seems to be getting worse.
This is on a defender 03 td5 model with 105k on. I had a similar problems on the disco at 260km just before replacing this clutch plates and all. Is this the same issue (where the little round thing was not getting good grip) or how can I narrow this down to find the problem.
Cheers an thanks for the help

This could be due to contamination of the clutch plates. Have you been wading lately? Try removing one of the plugs from the bell housing where it mates with the engine and see if you get anything nasty from there. If water, it may well dry out. If it's engine oil, transmission oil or clutch slave cylinder fluid then more work required!

    Hi mate,
This started before the Fraser trip where I did go through water, but as I said that was happening before.
I'll try the plug and let you know what's in there!
    Thanks

Mine Disco does the same, but i only had a new clutch put in not that long ago. Didnt do it at first but has been doing it for thr last few months, some days are worse than others, its strange.

Pretty sure i need to do some work on clutch components though, so im going to that before i do anything else. Matt

My understanding of clutch shudder, is an alignment issue or clutch plates wearing uneven or pressure plate thingies loosing pressure, but with the TD5, it also has a dual mass flywheel and this could be the problem if not the other things.

You can either put up with it or have it looked at.

or hot spots on the flywheel causing slipage/shudder.
take the plug out and dump a few cans of carby cleaner in there and flush out with a compressor and air gun. this will tell you how dirty it maybe in there and disolve any oil. if it gets better or goes all together then you have problems

    cheers phil
