to spark or not to spark.... disco 1 v8

my disco has broken down for the 4 th time in last month.
i now think it is a spark problem

when should the coil spark? how do u test it

im not used to this old school way of coils
im used to coil packs etc on commodore.

also how much would a new bosh coil cost or maybe there's a better brand. some help would be great
    your help is much appreciated

i love the landie but it;s got to stop with the break downs.....

well it just dies like lack of fuel. i thought it may be a fuel pump . but its not, also then i though it had a a blocked fuel filter. so i changed it, old fuel filter was filthy,

now today went for small drive all good, then when to go out again but went to start , no go.
then it started and stalled , now wont start. again i can hear fuel pump pressuring(is thats a word) but i think it has no sprk as i took of lead to coil and tryied to earth it(while missus turning it over) ,had no spark at all,

my disco fails to proceed now and again, and i have found that it will reset whatever goes wrong by turning it off and restarting.
yours sounds like it has got itself tied in knots also.
try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting - i know this sounds ridiculous, but sometimes it works.
i have also had the no spark thing happen five doors from home and tried everything to no avail, suddenly it changed its mind, still don't know what happened.
one time it was running badly and i banished it to ricks - he replaced a temp sensor and it was perfect.

coil should be sparking, can you beg, borrow or steal another coil from someone to test. If not Supercheap may be worth a visit. A new coil isnt much from memory around $50. I havent looked at replacing one in years though.
Just as another thought. Disconnect battery and clean all contacts and earths with wire brush. Just to be sure. Is the battery OK, cells havent collapsed etc.
Are there white powder looking marks on any of the HT leads? This would indicate arcing to an earth.

ok ill try that. i know the bat is ok. but yeah i do think its the coil no getting one spark at all.

if i ran 2 wires from bat to coil and then earthed the lead should thi make it spark? just trying to test coil
    the coil looks old

whats the general life span of a coil. ?

years, but they are like coil packs. When they go they go. Heat isnt particularly good for them. Its not the leads is it. Maybe the HT lead is cactus.

    egnition truble shooting.

hey dude, to test an egnition coil disconect all wires going to it, taging them first ( so you dont foreget where they go) and use a multi meter accros the pos and neg. you should get a low reading like 3-20 ohmes. then test from the high tention socket to ground on the coil it should be like 20 mega ohms.

DONT TOUCH THE LEADS AT THE SAME TIME AS YOUR FINGERS ! altho there is no power (ig 12v ) the multi meter will charge the coil like a capasiter and zap you !

( sounds like the voice of experinece you can compare the ohm readings to an owners manual. 99% of the time coils work or thay dont.

the lucas ignition modual is cactus. thats why pomes dring hot beer the fridges are made by lucus jk. i converted my disy to a "preformance ignition au" thay are made in au from billet and use modern bosh ignition modulators. thay are all made in au even the modulator !!! the best thing is that they are all built in. the disco series 1 uses a modulator that is external and it sits beside the jack pump in the passenger headlight airea. i ripped mine out and sold it on ebay. got 80 bucks with the disy prity good consitering the disy dident have a gear on the end any more.

check the egnition pick up sensor, disconect the distributor if it is a lucss it will be original ( says england on the side some where) conect a digital multi meter to the two wires and set to MILI VOLT you will get a signal of somting in the range of 50 mili volts ie 0.050 of one volt. its **** all but it will make the multi meter bounce around a bit and flash as you crank over the engine. as with the modulator it will ither work or not work. if there is no signal there is no pick up signal hense not telling the modulator to fire and giving no signal to the coil to spark. check the ground conections to the modulator from the coil wires.

let me know how you go .

    cheers, jeff.
