Is a crank angle sensor worth having in the glove box?

Hi all. Met a bloke the other day whose D2 with round headlights stopped at 80,000 k and didnt re-start. Was the crank angle sensor. I wonder if people with D2s (and Rangies with same set up) with a a bit of age on them should consider sourcing as cheap as possible the sensor to have in the glove box (much like I did with a Bosch HEI module when I had a commodore years ago - now RACQ patrols carry them, but not back then - and you are not going to get a patrol either in the middle of nowhere or carrying a CAS!). That way if in the middle of nowhere it can be changed out. I have lost my RAVE CD so I dont know whats involved in doing it (Landy Andy might post about that), but even if you are not mechanical a mechanic should have now problems locally sticking the replacement in...I understand that the Cam Angle Sensor can produce the same problems but it seems that the Crank sensor is by far the more common problem.

    Cheers

I have replaced mine as it kept logging a fault(noisy crank signal) when I removed it it was covered in grease/clutch filings on the tip,so cleaned it may be fine.Ive cleaned it and left it in the console.
You need an 8mm spanner, its located part way up the bellhousing on the drivers side, you get it from underneath.NOT MUCH ROOM FOR FAT HANDS.I did mine in the shed laying on my creeper,if a big fat bar steward like me can do it normal people wont have a problem. For the sake of 5 mins stuffing around I would have been better off putting it on the hoist at work.

They are pretty cheap. The only sensor I have had a drama with is the crank position sensor. It was replaced at about 15000 miles. I now have a couple of spares.

Thanks fellas. Andrew - is it as easy as undoing the thing using the 8mm spanner, pulling off a connector and then bolting in the new one and re-connecting it to the loom? Thats pretty good because it could be done 'on the trail' as the Yanks say.

    Ozscott,
On a TD5 or V8? The above comments are for the TD5.

I've never seen a D2 with round headlights

Yes it's worth carrying, but Murphys law means that the part that breaks or stops working, isn't in the spares you carry
