Can I replace Lucas EFI with a Bosch or ...?

    G'day all

My 88 RR 3.5 EFI seems to have serious issues and I'm looking for ideas for totally revamping the system - happy to invest some serious money to put my RR back on the road.

Is there a Bosch or similar system to replace the 'old' ECU and 'old' AFM ??

    many thanks

    cheers!

There are any number of people who will take your money to fit and tune an aftermarket computer system.
Or you can do DIY with a Megasquirt .
If you are not up to DIY, try Graeme Cooper who can fit a Haltech.

Its not practically ( cost effectively) possible to fit a Disco Bosch "Thor' Motronic system because you do not have the required hardware ( crank sensor, cam sensor,VSS, high pressure pump), and there is not much knowledge in OZ about disabling the Body/transmission functions.
All except the Megasquirt will cost a minimum of $1500-2000 , and if you cannot diagnose and fix a flapper its doubtful that you could build, fit and tune a Megasquirt.

Pretty sure I saw an ad in Markets Main Index - AULRO Classifieds for a Rangie for sale with commodore efi fitted, may be worth contacting the owner to see whats involved.
The Mrs Rangie has a WOLF 3D management system fitted. Was done by former owner,RichardK on here.Im sure Richard would help with any questions you have.

    Thanks PhilipA

I'll check around for various systems - seems to me that the ECU is now at least 20 yr old technology - may be some newer tech around.

    thanks again

Not saying do it but I am putting togeather a Delco (Holden) Using VN loom sensors, Haltech ecu and holden dizzy on mine.
The 14cux hotwire setup may suit you with Haltech piggy back ecu http://www.haltech.com/index.php?opt...d=24&Itemid=21
What seems to be the problem with the dunny door set up you have. Buy a manual and multimeter + pick up a few spares and it may still work ok.
They are very simple and robust set up.
If I were you I would not spend a lot of coin on a 3.5 efi as you will find little gain.

    Cheers Tony

Thanks for the input, but I really want to keep this one going - one owner, 170K genuine, garaged since new, rides like a new (old) one, interior perfect, seats perfect, all other electrics perfect, engine and transmission excellent ..... except for this EFI problem. I figure the car is worth around $3K, but if I spend $2K on it, I'd be very happy with my beautiful 88 Rangie for $5K

So I'm looking to first find the problem, and then fix it properly so I may get another few years enjoyment. Its been with an EFI tech now for 2 weeks and he's perplexed ... so I am looking for advice to help him (and me) resolve this issue - maybe a new ECU, AFM, fuel pressure switch ... I don't know at this stage.

    thanks again

Yes a Commodore Delco ECU is a possibility but again , while the ECU is cheap you will have to pay for dyno tuning and flashing the new data onto the ECU.

The current only Sydney Unichip tuner is Autotech at Granville. I spoke to Spiro recently about converting mine to Delco , and he replied that there would be no benefit Vs my 3.9 14CUX plus Unichip. He has the software to flash Delcos for other applications.
Delco would probably give the best result vs aftermarket, as they have something like 170 starting programs. Whether all the research that makes a Delco so seamless on a Commodore would apply to a Rangie 3.5 is a debatable point however.
Again, unless you can do the work yourself, it would cost quite a lot , with wiring, dyno time, O2 sensors etc.
