    Question Tappet noise 98 disco 1

    Hi , have just refitted 300 tdi after replacing mains , big ends ,rings and timing kit. But have a 'tappet noise 'that I cant get rid of , its not present at idle , wasnt there before the repair. becoming very frustrated !!!

    Have you tried running it briefly with the belts off - probably wont help but at least rules out a few things.

    Is it like all the tappets being loose or just one?

    Don't know if it's the same for a diesel, but I had a broken exhaust manifold gasket in my petrol D1 that sounded like a noisy tappet. Hope that helps.

    it sounds just like one. I am going to try replacing the valve stem caps, push rods and spring/spacers on the rocker shaft as two them appear not to have a great deal of tension left in them.

    Lift pump? Mine sounded like a bad tappet before it went!
