    Agree .
I have fitted a Flowmaster 21/2 in and out to my 3.9 RRC . This is centre in offset out so exactly replaces my main muffler .They are lightly baffled mufflers which give a "mouse" sound down low but do not drone.
The power gains are small and at Vmax, so hardly ever used.
    google Flowmaster or
MOTOSPECS automotive aftermarket products - incl brakes, suspension, transmission & electrical

2.5" max on the rear section. Source a better free flow muffler for the main, but keep it the same size dimensionally.
I got 2 Lukey Ultraflo mufflers but am a bit unhappy with the note. Being a straight thru type with steel and glass pack, there is no real gas expansion point to absorb all the high frequency clack clack and it sounds a bit like a 253 holden in a panelvan when you get it revving.
If you go too big and dont have enough back pressure, you will end up burning exhaust valves.
The EFI manifolds are quite good and the only benefits of headers are slightly better scavenging but in a standard engine you wont see much difference.
I like the note of the standard EFI engines, but its just a bit too muted. D2's sound the best IMHO.

    Hay All

I’ve left the headers original Graham Cooper advised that I will loose too much down low and add up top with extractors

The first set up was a dual 2 inch from the manifold to a Y section near the transfer case to a single 2.5 inch cat to a split muffler then to a resonator this made the engine breath to easy with very little back pressure it revved like rotary engine but lost a considerable amount of power, it revved and basically didn’t move

Today I went back and got the resonator removed and changed it to muffler with a baffle in it., lucky the baffle muffler has still retained beautiful note the motor revs a lot slower but climbs in speed quicker
