    Transfer case seal D2

The Transfer case seal on the D2 behind the handbrake drum in mine is leaking, i have a new seal to put in, what i need to know is getting the flange off, according to the rave CD i need 2 special tools to remove it to get at the seal, is there something i can use other than these tools.

Also it say to disguard the nuts and washers that are removed, one is a felt washer so i will need to replace that but what about the rest.

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.

    That would be a nope:

Firstly, when you take the brake drum off check to see if it isn't a case of the flange being loose. You can silicone the splines, tighten it up and it should be good.

I haven't replaced a seal on a later model LT230, but if it doesn't slide off of it's own accord, use either a two post puller or a steering wheel puller from super el cheapo.

For the 2nd tool, I can see why they say you'd need something to hold the flange whilst you undo and redo it up - you need 148nm( 110 lb/ft). Either use a big stilsen wrench, make up a tool to hold the flange like a big version of a ford viscous hub holding tool or put it in difflock, in gear, low range and chock the wheels(that works for me). As for discarding the washers - I and others seem to have plenty of sucess with coating the splines of the flange with decent silicone, reusing the felt washer and the large flat washer. The nut is just an ordinary ht metric coarse nylock. You can use it again if it isn't too rough - but make sure you get it torqued right.

ps: A piece of copper fire hydrant size pipe is just right for drifting the seal into the casing - that or a small piece of wood because if you hit it with a hammer it deforms - everybody can guess how I know that.!
