I think most fridge repair people could fix it. When I last visited the local repair shop they had a few engels in bits. Apparently those units had issues with bits rubbing through the piping causing a loss of gas. The repair man told me they just solder up the leak - and regas them. He also mentioned that cans can rub through the evaporator inside the cold area, but again that can be soldered up. I thought it quite interesting as I am looking to buy an Engel at some stage.

    depeding on how its dead....

    it might just be DIY...

on the early models there is a fusable link in the circut board if it gets a bit rotten with age it can blow out. Carefully solder (will need to check) a 5a super slow blow sand filled fuse in its place and you will be right again.

if it runs on 240v and not on 12v it may be as simple as one of the transistors having chucked a hissy, Mine was dying and while dad was over I had him throw his leccy mind at it and $20 later my engle is now perfect again...

If u have a dual battery setup, and an engle, and everything is operating ok,you shouldnt have any probs.

Cant remember exact amperage mine draws on 12 volts, but i think it is something like 5 amps,i can check in the morning.

I would run the fridge on 12v an if you can get a hold of a meter check the amp draw,it should be on the nameplate. If its ok fridge is good,so problem may be in the dual battery setup,or he is expecting to much out of it.

I think the newer ones do use a bit less power, but how much i dont know.

It is very difficult to know how long it will last on a given battery due to the many variables such as ambient temperatures, run times, set point, etc

Battery shops can give you an estimate.

    Hope this helps

And if your down my way i have a meter & can check it for u

the old ones draw more as they get older due to degredation of the components in them...

also as they get older the insulation breaks down so the have to work harder to keep cool.

engel can supply a replacement board for them, its a little pricey but its still cheaper than a new fridge if the old one is still pulling down...

nominal draw for most engles is in the 3.5-5 amp range when they are in good order.

Good point by Dave, the insulation could be better ,in the older ones it does break down, causing them to run longer.
If it is really bad you will notice the outside "sweating",particularly during periods of high humidity.
