    Defender front tailshaft

G day to one and all. after having fitted new coils some years ago the front off the defender was raised around 2 inches and having done that ive noticed the slipshaft cap has popped off and you can see the start off the splines. the shaft had a lot of wear in it when i bought the vehicle anyway but now i want to replace it. and that my friends is where you come in. chasing some suggestions on a replacement. will a td5 front shaft fit? or will i need to get the standard shaft lengthened a tad? any help would be appreciated. sorry its a 97 300tdi wagon

if the screw on cap has come off on the spliney side of business

    STOP....

thats what stops the splines from separating out when you fully extend the shaft....

I would say you are going to have to get your driveshaft lengthened or obtain a longer one as it could possibly come apart on full spring articulation on front drivers side. The main cause would be the lift kit. As Dave said STOP and fix before serious damage is done. I have seen the result of a separated driveshaft (Gearbox case broken, floor damage) and possible serious personal injury especially if your slip joint is up top near the front of the transfer case....Recommend urgent action................Bearman

To add to DD's post if you go for a D2 front prop which is exactly the same length as a Defender one (24" from memory?) you will need the corresponding output flange for the transfer case, as it is larger on a D2.

Thanks guys for the advice. have managed to get a secondhand one with good slipshaft for $110 great price i thought.i think i will measure the distance between the two flanges and find out what length travel i need. like you said better safe than sorry.
