    Disco brake light switch

Yesterday took the disco in for a rego check, to a bloke that wasn;t my regular.
Before I went in everything was working, at some stage during the check, I guess it was putting the brake-o-meter on the pedal , the brake switch ( above the pedal) somehow did something Lucas and fried itself, on the brake contacts, the abs contacts were fine. Henceforth the brake lights didn;t work and the #######failed me( plus I had forgotten to get rid of the anti-corrision material from around the oil lines)
Got onto the Brit Offroad guys and they had a switch in stock and in the mail before midday and it got here at midday today.( thats service)

Now my dilemma, and this is the second brake switch I have had to put in in 3 years.
When I connected it all up the brake lights were on and wouldn't go off. Checked everything, the contacts, put a load on the switchand it turns on and off. Ran out of options, was ready to give it a bath in a lightable substance.
Then in the failing light I checked the relationship of the button on the switch to the pedal and found the pedal wasn;t closing the switch.( aren;t mirrors good upside down)

Now does anybody have any idea how to adjust the switch in or out. As far as i know or could work out the bracket is fixed and so is the mounting clip on the switch plus i couldn;t see any adjusting rod on the pedal.

Did this boofhead plant his foot on the brakes that hard that it bent something???

    thanks in advance

    Hey JohnE

Just looked up the manual, models with ABS.

    REFITTING

Make sure the sleeve and plunger are fully out of the front of the switch.

Depress the brake pedal, then push the switch fully into the mounting bracket so that its retaining clips are fully located. Hold the switch in this position, then pull the brake pedal back up towards the switch to lock the switch in position.

If the switch does not function properly, first ensure that it is correctly located in the mounting bracket. Sorry to say they reckon that no adjustment is possible.

    Hope this helps

yeah you need to depress the pedal and pull the plunger out a few notches, dont worry about pulling it out too far it will reset itself when you let the brake pedal back up, also if you have cruise control do the same to that switch.

I replaced my brake booster and had the same problem as you.

edit : probably what has happened is he got his foot in between the switch and the pedal when he was stomping on it, that would reset the switch all the way in...

well I'll be the back end of a monkey

thanks fellas, i had an idea someone else had had a prob with this

i just had a fiddle with the burnt out bit and lo and behold the white plunger comes out on a rachet.
I can see what you mean about it reseting, it pushes back in again.

Now I feel like a real dill! ( okay i can supply references)

I went through the rave yesterday backwards forwards , looking at the schematics, thinking it was a wire prob, but didn;t even look at the 'how to replace a switch section.'

now that I think about it I think I pulled the plunger out the last time I replaced it.( after reading the rave of course) The memory is fading.

many thanks again, problem solved, now to find out why it fried.

I've got something to add to this. First of all, I wish I had've looked here before we customized the brake light switch. We didn't realize it had plunger adjustment and simply glued some plastic washers to the end of the plunger so it would contact the pedal. Anyway, my brake lights are working now.

The problems I still have are that the 'ANTI LOCK' error light is still lit. We disconnected the battery for 20 mins and this still didn't clear it. Also, the cruise control can be turned on, but pressing the 'set' switch does nothing. The left and right mirrors still work so its not a blown fuse.

    Any ideas?

regarding the anti lock error, have a look underneath and check there aren't any loose connections, failing that take it too someone who can reset the computer. Mine seemed to do this as well but when I replaced the brake pads it went away.

The cruise control could be a number of different things, it sounds like your brake pedal is sitting a little low, the cruise control switch is also on a ratchet which can be pulled out, it might be an idea to do that and see if it works.

    If not then check
    - hoses (disconnect the hose at the T junction behind the bottle and suck on it)
    - CC pump (remove and hook up to spare battery)
    - diaphram (either suck it or put your finger over the hose leading to it)
    - switches actually work (refer to link)
    - ecu (failing everything else then assume the CC ECU has died)

very usefull post by someone on landroverworld.org Land Rover Cruise Control Problems - Land Rover Forums

Is there anything to be aware of when fitting a brake controller, and connecting to the brake light switch?
