Coil spring rate calculation and resetting question

    Hi all,
I have a set of disco springs that I want to work out the lbs/inch rate and if suitable have them reset. Now, can anyone help me or point me in the right direction for the calculation, and what are peoples thoughts on having coil springs reset? The measurements are a touch over 15 inch in length with 7 coils at 17mm.

Pete, I have a textbook at work from my Mech eng days, it has all the calcs in it and formulas with examples. I'm embarrased to say I can't remember the specific formula etc, but you are welcome to borrow/ copy it if you like?

As for resetting coils, or any spring for that matter, the initial quality of the steel used and the process during resetting plays the biggest part in the end results effectiveness.

Estimating the correct value for the number of active coils can be a bit hit and miss.

Resetting the spring won't affect the spring rate, if the number of active coils is not changed - but I'm guessing you want to determine how much the ride height will change.

Yes determining the active coils threw me a bit, I ended up counting between the very end flattened bits. I also tested this method on a set of coils I had with known values and it was spot on.

I realise that the resetting only effects spring length. I wanted to determine the rate as I have a fair idea of the rate and spring length I need. As it turns out they are a similar rate to what I need and resetting will cost $77. Much cheaper than new springs.
