Thread: hi/lo range

its not usual but its a sign of a transmission that needs some TLC.

whats happening is drive a small amount of drive is being pushed through the transmission due to the belts/clutchs grabbing. chuck in a bit of tcase wear and youve got the problem. putting the transmission in Park should sort it out and if it doesnt then the engaging pawl on the box is rooted.

try dropping the tcase into neutral putting the trans in neutral, starting the engine and then seeing if the tcase can be made to select hi or low.

The 84 Probably has a Chrysler TF 727 3 speed auto, as suggested below these do tend to put a small amount of drive through in neutral - In neutral the hydraulic pumps in the box etc are still engaged. In Park the pump is off, that's one of the reasons it is bad to idle the TF in Park for more than 2 mins.

On these auto boxes there are two ways to engage Low range. Whilst coasting in neutral at less than 7 k's an hour. Or whilst maintaining a constant push on the HL selector, and whilst stationary, select Neutral then Reverse and come back to Neutral a few times until it rocks into gear. I always find rocking mine between R and N or D is the easiest way to do this.

Will it move with the ignition on and the engine not running?
