Gearbox whine
I have an 81 RR fitted with a 300tdi R380 gearbox and LT230 t/f . Ihave had drive train in since aprox 90000 km they have now got aprox 230000km. Oils have reg. been changed and have had no problems. Recently I have noticed a high pitched whine from the g/box. It is present in all gears but 2nd and 3rd seem slightly worse, all gears shift smoothly, and no other obvious symptoms are there. My regular RR mechanic seems at a loss as to poss. problem. So my question is should I worry?

My previous defender has a whine especially when backing off the accellerator at reasonable revs (R380 also). This noticable decreased with an oil change using MTF94. Unfortunately you can't buy the oil any longer to my knowledge. My daughter now has this car and it is still going well 50,000kms later.
I think the problem is the front bearing but to replace this is a bit of an exercise.
Erich.
