    Unhappy Disco Auto Trans Filler

Here is one for the mechanics out there.

I set out this evening to drain the ATF out of the trans. Thought I would let it drain overnight, and then just refill it in the morning. Good plan, I thought.

Before I dropped the oil, I thought I would make sure I could refill it. (See - the search function does work...)

That is where the troubles & woas started. I pulled out my trusty set of Torx bits, found T55, and it fitted into the provided hole. Attached the handle - wouldn't budge. Found the appropriate size ring spanner, attached it to the Torx bit - wouldn't budge...

So, leaving the ring spanner on, I attempted to use the largest amount of persuasion that I dare. Aka - big hammer - still no go...

And now here we are. The trans is still full of oil, so no issues there. Figured while I was under there, may as well check & see if I can crack the drain plug. Yep - tight, but got it to move.

So, the real question is: How do I get that @$%! Torx head bolt out of my transmission so that I can put a real mans bolt in? It looks like it has been done up with a rattle gun by some over zealos bloke who figured he would never have to see this car again. The washer is caved in so much, I am surprised it hasn't pulled thru...

Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated, and the standard forum renumeration schedule will apply...

Suggestion 1 .... Heat & cold are your best friend here

Drive car and warm up transmission on a short drive
Park up car in drive and turn off engine

Grab a can of "Loctite" freeze spray" ($15) and spray on nut ... wait till cold then give it another go

Suggestion 2 .... Go to Auto trans repairer

ON second thoughts ... a bit of a variation ...

Drive car and warm up transmission on a short drive
Park up car in drive and turn off engine

    Give the bolt a try

NO GO? .... Apply a large ice block to the nut until it is melted ... Should be colder than the casing .... Give the nut a go

NO GO? .... Apply spray freeze

    BAsil,

Firstly, they aren't a torx bit originally, they are an 8mm hex key. Someone has replaced it in the past, OR it has been butchered already by someone hammering a torx bit into it. Secondly, the easiest way to fix this issue is to remove the pan, (Easy in a Td5) and replace the filter etc while you are there, and get it on a bench to remove said plug.

    God luck!

hot/cold as descibed put the torqz bit back in with a ring spanner on it lean on the ring spanner and then tap the top of the torqz bit quickly and percussively with a small hammer.

Im with JC, Remove the pan, you have to to change the filter anyway and then you can get the oxy onto it if you want.

Loctite freeze spray or the worth freeze spray should do the trick.

Yes, at the front where the filler/level tube would attach in a D1.

My 03MY D2 had a T55 head on the filler bolt and I know it was never changed

I remember it used to get very tight between changes of ATF. I'd give it a quick run and put some heat in it as suggested. Then try the cold if that doesn't work.
