spare tyre...should it be the same width/tread pattern?

OK as tight as i might be....

providing the rolling diameter is the same does your spare or spares match your rolling four

i until recently i had 4 x BFG AT's and 4 x steel treks and depending which set i was running one or two from the other set would be carried as spares, i.e same rolling diameter

the bfg's are no longer and i am about to buy a new set, want 255/85/16's but as i have four 7.50r16's i am looking at buying four 235/85/16 in either the BFG MT or goodyear or bighorns, once again saving capital on the rolling four and using other as spares

i bet there will be legal reasons.........but

interested in your thoughts, do clubs have rules re: this.....i must ask mine

used to work for a certain "Automobile Club" insurance company - in Queensland at least, it is illegal to have two tyres of different make/tread fitted to the same axle. (Did i just give the game away?? )

In three years with the company I knew of two insurance claims cancelled on this basis.

Don't some passenger cars have "space saver" spares?
    They must be different.

Never heard that - might be insurance company policy - but I doubt it is a "law" thing. If it were the case, space saver wheels and tyres would be illegal. These have the same rolling diameter but different tread, width and aspect ratio to the main tyres.

I have a BFG ATs on my car and the spare is a Wrangler of the same size - passed rego no issues.

I believe there is a legal issue mixing different sizes to the tyre plackard and mixing tyres of different construction such as conventional and radials but that is about it.

I don't know about Qld, but in the NT the spare doesn't even need to have legal tread depth! I guess it only becomes illegal when you put it on.

usual answer is it doesn't really matter unitl the spare is actually fitted

the normal answer is you should try and keep spare in line with tyres on vehicles

most things l ahve read about spares of different size are to limit their use to 100km or less and don't speed over 80kph on them

space saver tyres are meant to enable you to get to a service station and change rpair your puncture they aren't made to drive around on it for long periods.

In fact, the law says that if you fit a space saver spare you are required to go directly to the nearest place of repair / replacement of the flat tyre.

You aren't allowed to go home first, you can't detour and do shopping on the way, etc. It doesn't matter if the nearest place is in the opposite direction to that which you were going.

Sorry but you are quite wrong.

Have a read of this: http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/reso..._vehicles2.pdf

Tyres must be the same size and construction on each axle. HOWEVER, it specifically states that it is RECOMMENDED that they are the same make/brand, but NOT MANDATORY.
