All I know is I have had tough dog and iron man foam cell shocks that leaked after getting hot and billy gas over oil and koni which I think are just oil shocks that are bullet proof. Pat

This entales a thesis of a response.....
In a nutshell, they all basically will do the same thing, and their effectiveness is determined by the valving which is set into them.
The design of the shock will affect its durability, it's resistance to fade and if it fades then its ability to recover.
I tend to think laden touring is the hardest thing you can do with a shock, and Monotube shocks are the ones that deal with this the best, as they dont fade. Gas shocks will fade but will come back again when they cool down. Foam cells once faded are shot and do not recover properly.
The monotubes tend to be expensive, where the twin shell (gas and hydraulic) tend to be cheaper. Foams seem to be inbetween somewhere, though I could never justify a reason to buy these. (after having had a coule of sets also)
In terms of construction, there are a heap of different ways that they can be done, some you have listed. Even within a construction type there are numerous variations/adaptations of these - such as remote reserviour, by pass etc. Thats a whole story in itself.
Cheers

Read my post on the pros/cons of a twin tube vs a mono-tube on this thread
More on Shocks ???
Foam cells just jam a chunk of open cell foam into the reservoir/outer cylinder.
Does eff all IMO except reduce a bit of foaming. (which actually occurs at the piston/valves)
