Thats what I had to do with mine, just either cut the spanner in half or maybe bend it. Its easy after that.
Hi all,
I'm a bit stuck, and need advice from ones wiser than me (don't laugh).
I've got my replacement Stromberg CD175's ready to go in, all connections removed from the old ones, but there are two nuts that i cannot remove (the LH carb bottom back and the RH carb bottom front). I just can't get at them - tried socket and all kinds of spanners (ring, open, flare nut or whatever they're called). Was going to remove all the others and then spin the carbs around to get at the others, then realised they are nuts on studs, not bolts.
Gonna have to grind a spanner right down to fit unless there is a better idea.
Any ideas appriciated...
Thanks in advance.

I have a "snap off" spanner - a ring open ender that I cut in half and then had silver soldered together with the two halves at 90 degrees to each other. This will enable you to undo the presently inaccessible carby nuts
Christopher
Cut one end off the spanner, heat up the middle of the "handle" of the remaining section, and bend it. I'll go out to the garage and take a pic of mine if you like.

Yep like others have said its time to sacrifice a spanner best done to an elcheapo from super shyte![]()
Bugger! I just checked my toolboxes and the spanner is missing. I wonder to whom I've lent it?![]()

I cut slight notches in mine with a grinder then heated and bent it to an L shape that is almost a C shape.
I dont envy you it's a PITA.
I tried cutting a spanner down really short, it worked but the bent spanner was easier, just.
Yep,
Bend or cut/weld if you were closer you could have one of mine (haven't found the carby on the defender yet)

I cut and welded one years ago. That's not the one you have, is it Bushie?

Thanks guys,
I cut one in half last night and ground the sides right down (even on the ring spanner end) because there doesn't seem to be enough room to even get a ring spanner on, or turn an open one. It'll probably break now.
Didn't want to bend one, since i couldn't work out how to make one bend work for both sides (wasn't going to attack 2 spanners).
Don't know if it makes a difference, but these are the old style carbys with the bottom adjustment.
I'm planning on using vice grips as the "handle" to my new spanner.
Giving it a go right after this coffee. I'll let you know...
Thanks again for the advice![]()
