    salisbury diff centre removal

    Gday.
I have a series 3 109 1976 Landy with a salisbury diff in the rear.

Can I remove the centre from the housing at home with out special tools.

I am rebuilding the whole vehicle and after pulling apart the brakes and hubs etc as whole heap of sludge and crap was in the housing ends.I want to clean the diff centre and check bearings with out getting too excited.

    Thanks in advance John.

Yes. Just remove the rear cover, undo the bearing caps, and use a couple of tyre levers to remove the centre. Soft hammer to refit.

However - if you just want to clean and check it, there is no need to remove it.

Possible yes but I use a home made diff spreader here some wiil say you don't need it. You are aware they have a crush tube on pinion for preload is a major concern.

Mark the Bearing caps with 1 punch mark on the lower left and 2 punch marks on the lower right and take note of which side the bearing shims come from. Mark the pinion nut so it does not get overtightened on reassembly.
Of course all the above goes out the window if replacing bearings
No need of a speader, hammer does it
