    Gearbox, transfer box and clutch - URGENT

    I having my geearbox pulled today due to the collapse of a bearing. While teh gearbox is out what else should I have done?

    I am doing the rear main oil seal but some guys have mentioned filling cavaties in the sump area with some sort of gooing silicone. I don't have a clue what they are referring to.

    What can be done on the transfer case? I am thinking of fitting a heavy duty clutch, any thoughts?

    I don't want to have to take the gearbox out again any time soon so please list all potential issues/faults which should be checked.

    The box will be going back in tomorrow (Wednesday) so please let me know asap.

    I would go for a Good Quality Clutch plate and Pressure plate over a H/D one, also machine flywheel and replace ALL clutch components, Slave and Master cylinder, Clutch release arm and pivot pin/bolt, no idea of what these "cavaties" in the sump area are, Regards Frank.

    Might mean the core plugs at the back of the block???

    Check them while your at it

    if the intermediate shaft has any weeping at all get it machined and bushed.

    Not sure what vehicle we are talking about, but except for the LT95 gearbox (and Freelander), all Landrover transfer cases can have a lot of repairs done without removal, and in any case can be removed as a much smaller job than the whole gearbox, so I would not worry too much if the transfer case is not looked at.

    Having said that, I would be inclined to replace the front and rear seals seeing that it is out, and check the condition of the handbrake, repairing as necessary. Also check the centre diff (assuming it is a Discovery/Defender) in particular the thrust washers on the planet gears. If your Landrover is fairly high mileage, you might want to consider replacing all bearings and seals. If it is an early R380 box, check the output gear on the main gearbox output shaft for wear on its splines and the shaft it goes on. There is a fix for it to improve lubrication.

    x2 This is a relatively common failure at high km on an R380 (pivot wears arm and punches through). If it is worn, replace it, if not, weld some reinforcing to the arm (I would be doing this to any replacement arm as well).

    It would help if we knew what vehicle, year model, engine, gearbox and t/case it is.

    If it is a 300Tdi the silicon reference is probably related to the T seals for the rear main bearing cap.

    If LT230 t/case, definitely check for spline wear as JD suggested. And if R380 gearbox, replace the clutch fork - if you look carefully it is probably has cracks around the ball seat - if it doesn't and hasn't been replaced, then it will develop them sooner or later.
