by Stage 1 adjustment I suspect you're referring to "adjusting the stop screw" ?

thought about doing my'n several times......especially as i have the slightly bigger intercooler....couple of things put me off though

    smoke.....

and it concerns me whether it will effect my engine braking, as its crap already in low first i would like to go slower not quicker.
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

The stop screw adjustment only has no effect on smoke or engine braking ( well it didn't seem to on mine ). It makes quite a difference to the turbo lag.

What screw is being called the stop screw?

Do you mean the full load adjusting screw at the rear, near the stop solenoid?

Or the adjustment screw above the sliding pin.

IMHO, the 1st adjustment should be the rotational position of the control cone. If you adjust anything else, apart from the full load adjusting screw, then they will go out of adjustment when the control cone is adjusted.

Here is a diagram from a Bosch VE pump handbook that shows the parts of the boost compensator.
