Sounds like it is the head gasket. May not be only that though is the problem.

Lovely christmas presentHead gasket appears to have blown on exhaust side only. It is blowing out water only out of top op tank. There is no oil in water or vice versa only seems to fill system up with air and expel water out. Does this sound like head gasket or something else? only got warm as it spat the water out. Head is hurting as it is 95 300tdi disco and is not worth spending heaps of money on. I'm thinking of replacing gasket and trading in and letting someone else keep spending money on it.

Has it had the head off in the past ?
Could be incorrectly tensioned maybe ?
Have had that happen to me, though not on a LR motor

I suspect it has been as it is the replacement expansion tank. It is hard too know exactly as they might have just replaced that as a precaution. The car seems too have reached that magical 250000km mark where it seems alot seem to blow head gaskets.(270000km).Shouldn't be water pump as i replaced it last year when it started to dribble from that area. Radiator was replaced with a reconditioned one earlier last year as the fins were rotting on the old one.Had noticed strange bubble noise coming from under the dash in the last month. Water levels had always seemed fine though, except i had noticed some bubbles in the coolant when you reved the engine for a bit. This started me thinking about gasket problem and i was contemplating upgrade before it got worse. Bloody thing seems to have beaten me to the punch though.![]()
Have just taken the head off. Sorry i don't have any pictures but i don't have a digital camera. On inspection I'm positive the head has been off before. It looks ok apart from the 3 brass plugs? that are in between the cylinders. The ones between 1&2 and 3&4 have corroded slightly and are no longer flush with the cylinder head surface. The one between 2&3 looks perfect. The only other negative is that the pressure build up seems to have caused the water pump seal to give way too. There was no leak before but in driving the car round to my back yard coolant seemed to be coming from that area. Wife shut the car down as soon as the gauge started to climb and apart from the expansion tank there didn"t appear to be any other area where the water had spat out when it broke down last evening.
