There are quite a few things that may cause ticking noises.
Valve clearances and worn valve caps.
Exhaust leak at manifold.
Clearance on big end bearings (knock rather than tick).
There a few things to think about / check.
The wifes Disco has started to develope a ticking sound on start up first thing in the morining. Some days worse than others.
The noise is quiet loud and seems to be eminating from to engine, it's very hard to track down the origin due it only lasting maybe 10-20 sec.
I have seen a similar noise posted on U-Tube but there was no explaniation as to what was causing the noise.
It's done a little over 222000km's an I am looking at doing the head gasket, as it is the fiber type and looks a little worse for wear.
Any help appreciated
Cheers

Mine was the fuel line vibrating against the body, pulsing from the lift pump

Consider it possibly being the vacuum pump.
Believe they can cark it at about those km.'s
On mine? well I just keep the fingers crossed.
But if however that is what it turns out to be, there is a very good thread on this forum for a DIY fix.

Mine was the vacuum pump as well, there is a post on here about the replacement and upgrade on which I posted a photo of the damage done when it goes. Probe around with a stethoscope to listen into a better defined location when it is happening. A timber dowel works, mind the fans and moving bits of course
Found the problem, was deadly terminal!!! The air con belt was riding up the lip of the pully and when it flicked back down it was making that horendous sound. Threw a new belt on today and all is quiet.
Thanks for all the suggestions
Cheers
