    Battery Terminals - Replacement

    Hi Everyone,

I attempted to connect up my dual battery system this afternoon but have found that I don't have enough room on my +ve terminal.

I already have the Traxide headlight upgrade kit attaching at the 'accessory' bolt as well as a supply line into the cabin. There isn't any room left! I thought that I would replace the OE battery clamp but I haven't been able to find a similar design i.e. two +ve lines attaching to the one clamp without the use of seperate lugs.

I don't have the $200 tool to crimp 32+ sized lugs. What have others done? Even if anyone has pics of their terminals to see if mine is different or otherwise.

    Thanks,
    Peter

May be some thing like this.
Deluxe Battery Terminal Clamps - Wirthco Engineering, Inc.
The clamp on the left( you may have too large the picture) will take many cables.
I find the terminal clamps which have a small plate holding a insulation removed cable on to the the saddle in the terminal clamp are handy as the two bolts which tighten down the saddle plate can be used with heavy duty round eye crimp terminals for other minor power supply jobs.
Just undo one of the bolts and and fit the bolt ( using a longer one if required) through the eye type fittings (as many as needed ) and refit so it clamps down on the main saddle plate to hold the main heavy power cable.
    I hope I have explained it ?

Im using rubberised resiliant mounts in fozzy think minature version of a gearbox mount and youve got it the bonus is you can do the +ve on one side and the -ve on the other.

Hi Peter, have a look at the link I’ve posted below.

Half way down the page there’s a 3 way battery clamp, Part N# BC-L1, see if that’s what you are after.

    Cheers.

I just connected mine to the starter motor. Exactly the same as connecting to the battery, but in my case it was far more convenient.
My dual battery set up is all on the passenger side, so the cable to the starter already had me half way across the car. Made it a nice neat job and the original battery terminals are untouched.

Thanks for the link. These are similar to what I'm using on the 2nd & 3rd Orbital in the load space.

Unfortunately the clamp you suggest can only take 1x 33m2 cable where as the Td5 was two. Do I have to get someone to crimp the HD eye terminals for me or is there a clamp out there that can take 2x 32m2 cable and still have room for extras? I've looked at a couple of sites including Projecta but nil joy.

    Thanks again,
    Peter

Rather than "Crimping the lugs" .... Have you thought about "Soldering the lugs"

    Just a thought

In the past I used to have access to large crimping tools. One mechanical and one hydraulic.

However on my last car I 'crimped' the 16mm square cables by inserting the cable in the lug and bashing it with a hammer on the concrete. Crude but very effective. They are still working to this day.

No I hadn't thinking it wouldn't stand up to the vibrations etc but I'll keep it in mind.

    Thanks,

Hi Peter, both soldered and crimped terminals work equally well.

Anyway, another suggestion is to fit a positive stud.

This is an insulated bolt which is fixed the the vehicle.

Just run one thick cable from your battery and another from the starter motor, to the stud and all your other positive connections are run from it.
