Hiccuping to me could point to a lack of fuel or duff signals from the injectors.
Just out of interest, how good is Diesel over there?
The TD5 in its standard fitment runs a very good fuel filter which filters the fuel twice?
What sort of filtering are you running?
From my understanding and experience of the elctronics of the TD5 the following sensors can cause dificult starting (amongst other things)
Starting at the top!
ECU - unlikely but you said the engine had got wet. did the ecu? was it fresh water or salt / mud? Have you taken the lid off for a look?
MAF - This can also cause a dipping of revs when driving (have you tried disconnecting it?) It shouldnt casue a total stopping of the engine or a failure to start though
ECT (engine coolant sensor) Should use a default value -also backs up from fuel temp sensor)
Crank position - Will stop engine dead.
Injector faults
Fuel Temp sensor -should use a default value though so not overly likely.
Then
Fuel pump relay. If this fails when running it will stop.
Main relay - as above this will cause the engine to stop (supplies current to ECU/MAF/Pump relay)
Glow plugs - but very very unlikely
Is there fuel getting to the engine?
The white smoke with the stop concerns me a bit.
Does it turn over at the correct speed?

one thing you could check is the sprocket that is bolted to the front of the camshaft the bolt holes are slotted and if they come loose (unlikely) this would throw out the timing for the injectors and valves, second thing would be to check the fuel pressure maybe the D1 pumps do not last long at the higher pressure.
Also are the glow plugs working?? but not knowing the history of the motor you have to assume anything is possible and if you are getting an rpm signal the crankshaft sensor is working.
has the EGR valve jamed closed??

I had the same issue with mine, and it was intermittent ..
In the end, it was my fuel pump on my td5, it was not giving enough fuel... but as you said its a tad different to your setup.
if it wont start Im tipping its fuel related be it a bad earth or something in the electrics between the battery and the fuel pump if not the fuel pump itself....
I cant put all your symptoms down to a single fault but I can put them down to 2 and my 2, with no further information available other than what youve told me and what Ive seen in the past, are
electrics to the fuel pump/fuel pump
delaminating hose.

Hiccupping I would suggest low fuel pressure/ volume, and the white smoke is very likely unburnt fuel caused by timing/ compression/poor spray pattern problems. Also, have you checked the possibility that one or more injector base sealing washers aren't leaking compression gasses back into the fuel rail? If you were using a Td5 intank recirculating type of pump, it would show symptoms like becoming noisy after a squirt up a hill, as it is trying to deal with aerated fuel in the head. This basically will stop the vehicle eventually after a bit of misfiring etc and will however restart after a comprehensive rebleed.
I'm thinking that if the system is utilising a different single in and out pre pump like the D1 V8i has, then it may not show these noise symptoms but may still act up the same way. BUT, it surely would then allow the system still to bleed air and restart again:confused:

I'm with Justin, and the inability to retstart is what worries me. It not as if they are that complicated in reality!!
White smoke sounds like the turbo hose delamination.
Given that this is an early Td5 could there be an issue with oil in the fuel injector harness? Don't know if it would prevent it from starting but would most likely run like a dog on 3 or 4 cylinders.
Can one of you more knowledgeable gents (mechanics) comment and tell me if the oil in the ecu is a furphy for these symptoms?

Starting with the fuel. It's good stuff generally, since I live in a town and fill at the local station that services (read owned by) the big rig fleets here in town they go through it fuel frequently and assure top quality. No water in the filter at all.
The filtration, rather than fit a giaganormous Swirl pot thingy I choose to use a very fine grade and still very large filter as offered by permacool, as advertised it filters better than the factory Td5 Filter.
Fuel pump relay get's energized and the pump runs ( you can hear it) pressure is an unknown at the moment.
Main relay, ECU powers up sooo It's working correctly.
Turbo spins freely, but that wouldn't kill the motor.
White smoke, it's unburnt diesel coming out of the tailpipe, could it be that perhaps there's not enough fuel (solids) in the intake charge to raise the compression ratio enough for combustion?
EGR is gone.
Had a bad MAF at first go, the engine started and ran okay. Changing the MAF helped performance a bit but mostly fuel economy.
I think I'll try and pull the fuel pump tonight, it's gonna be warm (25f)
