LT95 Rear Output Shaft Oil Seal

I have finally got around to fixing the leak from my rear output shaft.

I've removed the rear prop shaft to find the locking nut on the drum brake loose as. Might this be the cause of the leak? Also, the felt seal was between the drum and the oil seal whereas, the manual (as I read it) says it's between the nut and the drum on the outside?

A bit over 12 months ago, I had a partial rebuild of the box by a Rover mech in Brisbane, so the seals are new but I didn't want to risk driving back into the city and breaking down part way there.

I have spare seals, etc so can replace if you think it right but how do I get the oil seal out - brute force or some trick? I've had a screwdriver under the seal to try to prise it out but it doesn't shift.

Any help welcome as I need to finsih this off today as the wife wants to go Xmas shipping tomorrow (with the million other people who leave these things to the last minute)!!

If the nut is loose yes it could be the source of the leak.
Yes the felt washer should go under the nut, the seals are easy to get out just drive a screw driver gently
between the top of the seal and the housing just dont damage the housing then lever it out.
I put silicone on the spline as well to prevent oil coming down the splines
Do it once and do it properly
Also make sure there isnt a groove worn in the flange seal surface you may need to replace it??

the felt seal is about as useful as urmmm never mind....

if you dont have a proper seal hook to get the inner seal out punch one side inwards and then lever the other side out with a screwdriver and grab it with a pair of pliers then pull

assembly is

seal in
grease the running surface of the seal and the output flange surface.
work some form a gasket onto the flanges of the output shaft
place the flange on
put a generous coating of formagasket into the recess where the felt seal will sit
push the seal in
place the washer on
a dob of loctite 262 on the threads
wind on the nut and torque it up.

removing all oil and grease from the shaft prior to the application of the forma gasket and the loctite is key.

Ok, so I finally got around to draining the oil from the gearbox.

This is what I found and some nice brionze glitter in the bottom of the oil pan!

What should I expect in the not too distant future?!

thats about nominal, depending on the Ks youve done since the last time you changed it.

Ive seen more than that coming out of a box that was getting oil changes at 10K km intervals while the owner was experimenting with oils and to my knowledge is still going today.

if those "spires" on the plug are easily deformed and when cleaned off of the plug with a clean white rag smear across it like grease without any splinters or chips

its when you start getting thin slivers of material, chips and splinters in the bottom of the drain pan and on that plug or if your oil starts coming out smelling like its been burnt that you need to start worrying.

Just pulled the tailshaft and hand brake drum of our LT95 as it was leaking a bit of oil.

Whats the part number of the rear output seal and where can I get one from? JC do you sell them?

ETA will strip it down, and clean it up before changing the seal.

Pete,

Oil Seal - 9062240
Felt Oil Seal - 594029 (as Blknight says - up to you whether you use it or not, I guess. I did and then filled in around it with gasket former)
Oil Shield - 571970 (need to pull this off before you get to the oil seal)

Also, remember to replace the locking nut.

I used Loctite non-setting gasket on the spline onto which the drum fits to seal it up too.

All seams to be good so far. Although the front output's now sprung a leak, so it might be worth doing them both at the same time. I guess it's the case of weakest failing first, and so on down the track. I'll be replacing the front and all the axle seals next.

Front oil seal - 571175

The front doesn't seem to have the felt seal.

I can't remember where i got mine from (It took me ages to do the rear becuase I thought it was going to be a hard job) but it would have been either, Craddocks, Paddocks or FWD at Yerongpilly.
