Hi
I noticed a slight fuel around the outlet of the lift pump. It is not an old unit, about 18 months old. Checking the connections I see that the inlet and outlet shafts actualluy rotate in the pump housing. Is this ok or a fault? My old one was solid. I am not sure now if the fuel came from the loose fitting in/outlets, or the connector as I just washed the engine bay. Will keep an eye on it.
There are two types of 300tdi lift pumps - see the thumbnails below. Both are sold under the part number ERR5057. My Disco came with the type on the left, whilst I've seen the type on the right more in defenders (it has a little mesh filter in the top/inlet). When my old lift pump decided to die, I tried one of the defender type, but upon installation it leaked from the same place as yours. It appears that since the defender type ( The generic name of the manufacturer escapes me at the moment) is a cast alloy top, it is cast with those pipes in place. So it's more or less an interference fit, and it is not resistant to twisting when installing the lines. The Disco type is a little more robust around the inlet/outlet as the top is all steel. However, the aftermarket versions can be a little off in the alloy base, which leads to cracking around the pivot on installation ( and a nasty oil leak - I know this for all the normal reasons). If you decided to put a new one in, either be extremely gentle when doing up the connections on the defender type or exercise care when bolting it in with the disco type.
ps: Apparently there is now a spacer (like an extra gasket) to go in between the block and the pump to make the diaphragm last longer. I've never had that particular problem, but others have.
