    Excessively light power steering

wondering where to start looking to fix my power steering issue.

put up with it for the last few years, but tryin got get the 90 handling better now, due to the V8.

the steering is excessively light, as in any speed down to a crawl you can flick the wheel and it keeps turning (even with 35's - on bitumen). not a problem when slow but on the freeway is way to touchie and you have no feeling through the steering. vehicle is a '87 90.

where do i start looking to resolve the issue?

    cheers

Do you have a steering damper fitted? If so I'd start there.

Maybe you need some shims removing from the swivel hub railko bushes to achieve the 12 lb drag required?

They could be too loose & unless checked, you won't know.

The steering box will need to be stripped down and repaired. May as well send it in and have the seals done at the same time. The over assistance is a valve issue inside the box itself.

I'd look at the steering box, they are very particular as far as pre-load goes, that said so are the swivels.Drop the rod off the box and pull on the drop arm,if it moves freely it needs re-shimming. Pat

So does that mean the "assistance level" is adjustable in some way?

BTW are we talking 3 bolt or 4 bolt steering box?

The steering box works the same as the swivels. What happens is there is an amount of resistance which is the pre-load which takes out the minute swings left and right from the steering so you only feel the movement in the wheel once the load on the steering is above the pre-load level. The swivels take out most of it and then the box does the rest but if the swivels are worn the movement moves to the box and because of the gearing the steering wheel spins very quickly which makes it feel even worse. The power that the box gets also effects this as if the box is free to move any slight turn on the wheel is then magnifide as the whole process of power assis is then made faster which then makes you chase the steering to make it go straight. The whole swivel, steering box, dampner part of your vehicle is a dance routine that requires all the players keeping in step.
