Rebuilding a Rover V8

I've just been down to toolworks @ mccgrath hill , while i was there i grabbed an AF Allen key socket set and a breaker bar , came back and tried undoing the Allen head Bolt with 7/32 " allen socket , it won't undo it, :( I think JC said it was 11/32" , 7/32" alen socket is just a fraction too small and started burring the edges so I stopped , it would have distroyed the allen head on the Bolt , I've called the local Snap-On guy to see if he can help with the socket ,but I think he's gone on Holidays , well guys I'm stuck :(, does anyone here have a 3/8" or 1/2 " drive 11/32" Allen head AF socket.

If 7/32" is the correct socket , I may have already "burred" the allen head bolt by using 5.5 mm earlier

Just go the centre punch route. It sounds like nothing will fit properly now anyway. As said before, they can be very tight.

BTW, if it has an Allen key screw, it might have been changed before. My '87 had a flat blade screwdriver head & I replaced it with an Allen key screw.

Scott , if 7/32 " WAS the correct size which I don't think it is , then I'm stuffed , but if 11/32" is the correct size it most probably WILL do the job ,the edges of the allen head Bolt is not quite burred all the way thru Yet , and I have a suspicion that if I gave it a go with 11/32" it will get if off :) I tried the Centre Punch approach it won't budge:mad: I don't really don't want to go the grinder or drill approach yet until I've tried a couple of more option.


Edit : Sorry my mistake 11/32" would be too Big , it's almost 8.7 mm which won't fit inside the alan head Bolt

Yep , it will , actually That's been organised this afternoon , along with a 6mm Spline Socket and some sort of friction compound :twisted: I'm gonna try a few things this afternoon to get the B$%^#%T off..

If it wont pop by 2/1/ 09 let me know and I will bring some tools:angel: Inc 1/2" drive hex, drills, easy outs,Taps etc

The Bolt head as you can see in the pic below is * cough * "shagged" *cough* and I think It happended , "once upon a time when a Total Novice mechanic in the PennantVille was trying to undo it with a 5.5mm Alen Key :angel: and he managed to do this to it.:p

I have never heard of Grip Doctor, I will have to keep it in mind for my next problem cap bolt.

It's really good stuff John , I was actually surprised when I placed some on the tip of the 7/32" Alen socket and using the Breaker Bar it just undid it with quite an ease:eek:

Mike , when I looked at the Photo , My initial thought was , naaaahhh there is gotta be something "wrong" with the Alen Socket , it must be a "manufacturing fault" , but when I compared the Tip to the others , Mate, you're Right , the Fugger is Twisted :eek:

That's really "well spotted" Mike. There must have be an enourmous amount "Torque" placed on the tip of the "Alen socket".
