Rebuilding a Rover V8

Important question ... Did crud fall into the oil gallery? ... When you used compressed air

If answer is ... unsure .... have a good look :eek:



A solution to clean is maybe ....
Get a thin tube and sticky tape it to the end of the vacuum cleaner and insert it slightly into the gallery ... Be carefull as you will also suck oil



You don't want debris left in there as this will push it up into the rocker gear and block thier lube lines and this will or can, result in a rocker not being lubed

Not Really sure , where exactly is the oil gallery Mike , remember you're talking to a complete Dummy and this is engine rebuild 101 :D

It's at the rear of the block at highest point. You may be lucky. This is a P76 Block that I drilled as don't have one:mad: to take Rover heads.

Notice the ridge and scores on bores. Not as nice as yours are. Had a heavy hone and holden starfire pistons fitted with pins reamed. Was years ago and is still going strong.

Also lay a rag into this valley area ... never remove it ... IT is to catch any tools or debris ... and stop it falling through to the sump :)

Yep , I see it Tony , Thanks, I'll check in the Day light, and just a possibility if there is what's my best option , pull the whole bottom end apart and maticously clean everything and put it back together:twisted::p:D

Edit : Thanks Mike , Just saw your Post , I placed a coupla towels over that whole area to stop any debris falling inside.

Nah bugger that - to hard. Stick a nice grunty drill down dizzy hole with a spade and watch oil + crud excrude from the hole:twisted:

You just need to cover the lifters & especialy the cavity holes in the middle where you can see the cam ... With a rag , folded / doubled over and nicely tucked into the edges (just like tucking a baby into bed :D) ... to catch & stop stuff from falling through ...

Don't have rags dangling all over the place as you may accidentally hook it while working and then it makes a mess .... as then something flings in the gap provided and then ... Presto .... A nut / washer / socket / whatever is guaranteed to fall down in the sump // I have had some close calls ;)

I'll take the towel on the left:p

On things falling in engines 2...... 1 x rover & 1 x 351 ford had to undo mounts etc to get sump out. The others... rear end of larger tractors:(
