How much oil should a 300tdi use?

    Hi All,

My 130 300tdi with non-aerodynamic camper, all up weight of 3.5 tons uses a litre of oil for about 2,000 k's, cruising at 100KPH. The engine is working hard with the weight and the wind drag, but even so it seems a lot of oil usage. The car has only done 130,000 k's.

Can anyone tell me how much their 300 tdi's use please?

    Thanks,

    Paul

Through combustion with a Provent, nil between 5,000k changes. Starts to use a little at around 7,500, bout 200mL. Same with my old 200Tdi.

Through the rear main leak - lots

Not enough to be worth topping up between changes with a motor that has done 150,000 kms.

My 93 200 Tdi at 447,000 clicks (has been rebuilt once) doesn't need topping up between 5,000k oil changes.

Just remember if you drove it around town for a while EG 5KK the oil will be diluted with diesel/water etc, and this will burn off when you go on the highway.

Check the valve stem seals. Often they aren't seated home properly on the valve guides from the factory, so you lose a fair bit down the guides.

Also the type of oil can have a bearing on things. Some oils have a far greater volatility than others, so they will be consumed faster (past the rings and stem seals) This is tested as a NOACK volatility number, which is expressed as a % but rarely published as few oils rate under 10% NOACK.

At the moment, just over 250,000km, 4000km since the last oil change, mostly big runs around here with a tare over 2700kg and a trip to Sydney at the weekend (700km round trip) and the level hasn't changed on the dipstick.
Prior to changing the stem seals it would use 600ml/5000km. Three of them were floating with the stems.

Tearing a seal they use more oil than if the seals are loose and acting as umbrellas too.

    Thanks everyone for the replies.

I don't recall ever topping up the oil before the last trip, and what you have all said confirms what I thought.

I used most of a 5 litre Penrite container on my recent trip, about 11,000 k's.

Bugger! I just hate the day I had D-gas fitted. I have a forlorn hope that things might return to normal now that it has been removed. Fingers crossed.

    Cheers all,

    Paul
