    Ignition safety fried

Think I fried the ignition safety switch by overheating the gearbox dragging along Noosa Beach the other day. Won't start in Park or Neutral, but I can start it by crossing wires, although not from the ignition. Various other possible causes have been ruled out by those more knowledgable than I. Its going in Wed for a fix.
My question is, how dumb is it to have this switch so close to the gearbox that it can be fried. I'm told its a very common problem.
I think I'll get a gearbox oil cooler fitted when the plastic recovers from Christmas. Is that the only solution? Can the safety be moved away from the gearbox?

no the switch cant be moved (well not practiaclly) as its required where it is to sense the gear that the transmission is or isnt in.... (park or nuetral)

its not only copping the heat from the gearbox but also from the exhaust and engine bay that gets funneled through the underside of the car.

Apparently this is a common problem. You'd think they'd have found a solution. How do other manufacturers do this?
