    S3 Engine tuneup

Ok, i'll admit i've been slack and never learnt much about tuning my engine.

I wanted to check the adjustments today in my luch break.

Engine RPM was fine to check, but then I struck problems. The dwell on my meter just went off the scale when I switched to it, is this because it';s way offf, or because I have an electronig ignition distributor?

also, my battery is under the passanger seat. Attaching the timing light has to be done on other cables. was I having a blonde moment, or is my timing light broken. I couldn't find anywhere in the engine bay to get a live feed for power from, any hints or tips?

    1. Dwell angle is meaningless if you have electronic ignition - whether the timing light will work from it will depend on how the light picks up its trigger and the type of electronic ignition.

    2. Probably the easiest place to get a live feed is the battery side of the starter solenoid, normally on the firewall at the back of the engine - but I seem to remember you have a Holden engine, so it will possibly be on the starter. There may also be an accessible live terminal on the alternator.

Yup, 2 solenoids on this vehicle. 1 on the RHS of the engine bay (6 cylinder) that is disconnected, and one on the holden hidden under the extractors. Altenator it is while staying away from the fan with the cables.

I tought the dwell would be irrelevant with the electronic ign. it's a system out of a blue motor. Back to points when the 2.6 goes in. I have seen electronic dizzies for sale, but $$$. I'm not really a fan of the conversion kits either.

    Thanks again.

another thing with the timing light is that the connector that goes on the spark plug lead is usually marked with an arrow that points to the plug.

    cheers phil
