    Mystical Squeeling Noise

    Hi, wondering if anyone can shed light or suggestions as to the cause of a god awful squealing noise coming from the the motor as soon as its running. Mechanic changed bearings in belt pully, quiet for day or so that horriffic again. Changed brand of belt, quiet all the way home and start slight noise again next drive and back to full on squeal again. Noise dissapears with lube applied to belt area but you have to do it before every drive and it gradually starts after a time anyway. Really pulling hair out of it and wanting suggestions to take to mechanic.

    You have answered your question.
    It is the belt slipping on the Pulley tensioner . Causeing the belt to squel. Goes away when you put lube or WD40 on the belt but starts up again when that lube has dissapeared

    You do not say what type of car. Is it a V8? diesel ? disco 1, 11, RRC?

    Isn't there an issue with 300Tdi where the water pump has a bearing in the timing cover which fails? Which sometimes stumps mechanics.

    Hi, its a 1997 Defender Tdi. So if the noise dissapears when lubing the belt area would that be the case if it were the water pump. Our mechanic has mentioned it as a possibility.

    Way to test is while the engine is running put some wd40 on the belt on the left hand side of the engine (as you look at it) And hence the other side of the engine away from the water pump. If this stops it then it shows it is not the water pump.
    Got the same problem with my 300 Tdi 90 and have changed the belt for differant make and still not fixed it .

    I think some one else had the same drama ... something to do with the pulleys or the tension pulleys not being aligned properly? .... there where some photos showing the rib of the new belt being chewed

    Can't remember where tho ....

    Yep have changed the belts a couple of times. Seems to dissappear when sprayed on the bottom right hand side pully (near alternator?) when facing engine bay.
