Ive got the same problem but only after I degrease or water comes in contact with belt.

New belts, tensioner, waterpump and idle bearing so I just spray wd40 on the belt, it goes away.

But I have read on here that some brands of Serpentine are bad for Squeeling.

But mines not loud just a little annoying ..

I also spray on trhe bottom right next to alternator and goes away......

i hav the same problem with my 1994 200tdi defender it all of a sudden started making an unbearable squeeking noise as soon as you kick it over so i applied soapy water to the belts (after replacing the old belts) it stoped the noise for about 10 mins max then it gradually started once again so then we listened around the water pump and we came to the conclusion it may be the water pump so off we went and got a brand new water pump (wich hasnt been put in yet) but there was one other thing that we didnt pick up on ourselves and was pointed out by another Land rover enthuisiest he realised that my pulleys didnt seem to lign up (top pulley was a little bit forward) and that may also be contributing to the problem. i still hav the noise in mine because i am waiting until i get time to put the new water pump in , a new timing belt , and also take pulleys of and see whats going on in that area.i dont know if the pulleys can be moved forwards or backwards or if they hav to hav something else done to them.
anyways as soon as i kill the noise i will let you people know !

    Wink Fix

Ok have done all the things suggested in this post and then finely bit the bullet and replaced the tensioner, noise gone instantly and have done over 15 thousand ks since no squeak!

I guess after thousands of ks holding tension the spring finally got tired!

Hope this helps only cost about 100 bucks.

Guys i have read somewhere that the plastic bushing in the tensioner flogs out and allows the tension pulley to sit slightly sideways under pressure. This is where the squeal comes from surposedly, i have tried everything else so am picking my new tensioner up tommorow. I will let you know if it fixes it

It is the Pulley tensioner not being allinged with the rest. So the belt squels when going up it

    Fixed Mine

Well after reading and making a post on this I went out and spent a couple of hours on the defender as Iam still on hoildays .

Cleaned the groves of all the pulleys, balancer and also the new Serpentine belt.

So far so good no squeeling .I should of done it when I fitted the new pump and tensioner.I did read on here that this can cause squeeling so I used a razor blade, wax/gease remover, rag and the air blower gun.

There was heaps of black crap in the groves of the pulleys, tensioner and also belt.

    Anyway hope this helps.

Guys i got my new auto tensioner today, fitted it while car was cold and guess what was missing when i started it? had to go out to a property and did 360 kms this arvo without a single squeal

My symptoms were the same, squeal on start up and just get worse until it warmed up then it would be there but a lot better. I was using wd40 just to shut it up until i got my tensioner.

Dayco APV1004 i got mine at an auto 1 store for $179 which included $15 overnight freight

Hope this helps some of you.
