Disco Transfer Case in a Defender

    Hey all,

I have my eye on a secondhand defender, and after chatting with the owner, I've found out that he has popped a transfer case from a Discovery into it.

Now I understand that the disco transfer case has a 1.2:1 ratio vs a 1.4:1 ratio in the original defender tcase, meaning with the new transfer case, the defender should now have a higher road speed. But is there any other factors I should know about? Effects on fuel economy? Effects on the lower gears? More prone to damage? Louder? Quieter?

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Hi,

It wont necessarily have a higher road speed, but it will reduce the revs for a given speed.

It should also be slightly quieter, due to the discoveries quieter gear set, as well as the reduced revs, but maybe not quite as strong.

Fuel cosnumption should be improved, on teh road anyway.

    Low Range will be unaffected.

I take it the transfer case he used has the Centre Diff lock? (or did he just swap the gears?)

I'm not 100% sure, but by the sounds of it, he swapped out the entire transfer case.

    I'm running similar in mine.

Road noise - it doesn't make much difference TBH. It's still noisy if you don't insulate the cab.

On-road - Taking off uphill puts more strain on the clutch, especially if you are towing. However the benefit is that you are only running approximately 2500RPM at around 100km/h. Fuel consumption in my 200tDi barely gets over 10litres per 100km's.

Off-road - exactly the same. The ratio's are the same as the Defender box.

    Cheers

At the end of the day I like it a lot, and I think it's a good modification for on-road performance.

However the down side is the take off. Another thing to consider is that hills, towing and head winds will see you a lot in fourth gear. However this will also happen with the standard box.

    Cheers
    Chris
