    V8 exhaust manifold gasket replacement.

    On my D2,,
Is it worth using gasket goo on the new gaskets?

or for that matter using gaskets?
Is there a tube of something that works ?

the metal'd gaskets are the way to go....

not many goops will stand up to exhaust gasses.

Start putting penetrating oil onto the heat shield bolts now if you want to remove them anytime soon.

You may have to work them in and out, gradually loosening them if you want to avoid tearing the rivnuts out of the rear half of the shields.

I don't know if the D2 are the same as the D1, but make sure you fit the Exhaust gaskets the right way round.
You'll see why if you offer them up to the heads and look at the fitment against the exhaust port holes. Even though they will go either way, if you put them the wrong face side on you will see there is not a correct seal as they cover part of the exhaust port.
Unbelievable, but true as they look identical either way you turn them until you actually fit them as they fit both ways . This can't be seen when the manifold is fitted .

    From the RPI website:
Although it may seem obvious, which way round you fit the exhaust gaskets, it is very possible to get it wrong, We strongly suggest you check [& double check] the correct alignment as the following 2 pictures will show, getting it wrong has serious power loss implications.

It's clear to see just how wrong things can be. The problem is not 'the wrong way round', but 'inside out & the wrong way round'!

Surprisingly enough, exhaust blow was not a problem but power was 40% down (minimum), especially as rpm. increased.

When you put them on just check the alignment on the manifold.

    exhaust gaskets

hi all this is my first post i like this site its been really helpful re exhaust gaskets i always use goo not so much as to seal the exhaust but to hold those annoying gaskets in place while i put the manifold back on, i also lay them out in order ie right side up and check before bolting them up and only get it wrong sometimes

    FWIW - Use genuine parts.

I've tried some of the after market ones before but have found they fail loads quicker than the genuine ones.
