    130 wiring short

    i have a short in 'fuse 3' circuit, which is the indicators, fuel and water temp and hazards circuit.

    i have tested the circuit (blown the fuse) with most of the main bits of the circuit disconnected: flasher relay, indicator switch, hazard switch, instrument panel, water temperature sensor. other than the fuel guage, which i haven't done yet, is there a common reason for this circuit shorting out.

    any tips or hints much appreciated (including whether this post should be in a more appropriate bit of aulro)

    It's common to get shorts in a 130, I've had the reversing light circuit, the LHS park lights (oops, I caused that one. Too long a screw in the number plate light caused that short )
    and another one I can't remember where.

    Most have been somewhere in the loom where it travels down the RHS chassis rail. Grab it where it enters the rail near the engine bay and pull it out a bit and retry the circuit.

    I've been through something similar with my 110 County. There is a single permanently live wire that runs in the loom to the rear of the car, inside the chassis. This wire had worn through (along with several other wires) and shorted. It was also feeding current into other circuits in that part of the loom.

    It is not easy to find the short, but in my case I disconnected the rear loom by pulling the plugs in the engine bay (there were 16 wires) and working my way through with a multimeter and test light. The wire in question was purple and, ironically, did nothing. It was an auxilliary power wire.

    In the end I pulled the whole rear loom and spliced in new wires, running them along the top of the chassis. Hopefully you won't have to do the same!

    Thanks for that - my next step was to disconnect the connector in the engine bay, so hopefully that isolates the fault.
