Your not going to want to know this but you would probably need to.
The head gasket actually cuts into the head face slightly.
The problem you are going to have is that the absoloute max you can really get away with skimming is about 8 or 9 thou.
Do you know how much was skimmed off last time.
Did you change the head bolts when you did it last time just out of interest?
Ok bearing in mind i've never actually worked on a landy (apart from being a youngster passing dad the tools!), has the water pump impeller got any vanes left on it? I've had a couple of them on other cars.
Probably easier to check than pulling the head off, is there any coolant actually flowing in the radiator?
Do you think that it could be the waterpump? Can I try to tighten the head bolts say 1/8th of a turn. I've just spoken to trs in adelaide and they think I should give this a go.
Mate, did you have the head crack tested? I Mildly cooked a head on an old 300 Tdi and the pressurisation of the system was caused by a tiny crack in the head. The shop welded it and it was fine for many k's after.
Well, like i said, I've never worked on a landy, but I've seen a few dud water pumps cause the same symptoms.
sure if you feel like risking the snappage of the bolts.
this should be done as par for the course after machining but before the rehardening process of the head.
you can unbolt and rebolt the td5 head as often as you like without having to machine it providing you measure it and its still flat, you replace the head gasket and you replace the head bolts.
the only way Ive worked out of checking the flow is by running the heater and seeing how quickly it gets warm in relation to the engine temp...
Im seriously considering getting the radiator modded to have a plug cap in it like the tdi and v8 radiator.
Just a thought, my TDi went in three times and on the third time they skimmed the block, turned out there was a warp in it.
Got a free engine...
I am not totally convinced by that Dave. The head gasket cuts into the head face and I wouldn't be risking it. (I would never have risked it on my race engines running alloy heads, and head gaskets with fire rings)
I also think that generally the re-hardnening is unnecessary.
