    Newby question

    Gday I'm new here and kinda new to the world of rovers.
    Looks like a great site too! Plenty of forums
    Done the intro forum thingy just before so heres my first question.
    What series is a 1972 SWB coil sprung wagon?
    Just want to know so I post in the right forum for this model. Thanks

    that would be a reworked series II.

    Good question. Is it deffinately coils ? Could be a hybrid such as a series body on a Rangie chassis.

    My 72 SWB is a 2A, but the coil springs are a mystery.

    Yes, definitely all coils. Dont know if it was always this way though but looks factory.
    Its also been chopped into a ute and a 2" body lift and had a 350 V8 chev diesel put in (ex oldsmobile).

    Series Landrovers (all Landrovers up to 1983) were all leaf spring. 1972 would be a Series 2a.

    Coil springs could be either a conversion, possibly via a new chassis, but the most likely is that what you have is a Rangerover chassis with a 2a body. The problem with this conversion is that the Rangerover is 100" wheelbase, where the 2a is either 88" or 109". This means either the body or the chassis needs modifying, and it might be interesting for you to check your wheelbase. If it is 100" it confirms a RR chassis, but if it is 88 or 109 you should look for signs it has been shortened or lengthened.

    Series 3's started in 71 so could be one of these as a hybrid - if the dash instruments are in front of the driver it is a series 3 - in the centre of the dash a series 2a.

    Thanks guys.
    Yeah the chassis has been chopped back at the rear by the looks so probably an RR chassis with the SWB body.
    The owner who recently bought it wants me to do a heap of work and a few mods on it (electrical and fab work) to tidy it up etc so Im trying to find out whats what on it.
    Repaired a cracked rear diff housing and cracked fuel tank on it so far.
    Will measure the wb and take note of the dash next time its in.

    BTW it also has a separate overdrive (shifter, fairy overdrive??) right next to the drivers seat.

    Also where is the edit function for my posts, it doesnt appear.

    Separate overdrive lever is normal for a Series transmission - and I think it is for the Rangerover four speed transmission (LT95) as well. If it is a Series transfer case, it is very unlikely that the Fairey overdrive will stand that engine for very long, if it is a LT95 Fairey overdrive it may do a bit better.

    I think the edit function may come with subscription, and in any case is only available for a day or so after the post is made.
